Running with the Devil

Marion Jones has been sentenced to six months in prison for lying about steroid use and a check fraud scam. The check fraud scam involved her baby-daddy, Tim Montgomery, and she denied having known about it. Regarding the steroids, of course she's been stripped of many of her medals, including her Olympic medals.

Fair enough on losing her medals. But prison time? Why is the government sticking its nose in athletic affairs? Is this really what federal investigators and Congress finds to be top priority?

I never understood why steroid use in baseball was the subject of a Congressional hearing, either. It's no wonder that this Congress has an approval rating lower than even President Bush, and the reputation of being a lame duck.

Too bad for her. If she'd only been found guilty of felony charges of "lying and obstructing a leak investigation that reached into the highest levels of the Bush administration," she'd be off the hook.
