I wish I had posted this before Christmas, but it's still in time for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, and Father's Day! Oxfam's gift-giving program, Unwrapped, is an opportunity to donate useful and meaningful gifts to people in poor countries while honoring someone you know.

You choose a gift from their site, and they send a card to your chosen recipient explaining what's been given in their honor. Then Oxfam uses your money to either buy that specific item or something related to it. For example, if you choose a camel, the money may be used to buy an actual camel, food for the camel, on market education for herders, or even in some circumstances, to meet another pressing need someplace else. One way or another, someone is benefitting greatly from your gift, and it's someone with a dire need.

The gifts start at $18 (blankets, mosquito nets, water jugs) and go up to several thousand dollars for you high rollers out there ($10,000 builds a house on stilts). You can buy farm animals, school supplies, trees to be planted, and even craft materials with which to build a sustainable business.
Who could complain about knowing that instead of receiving some token gift they don't necessarily need, the money is going to help someone? (If they did, it would be their last gift from me.)
While you're at it, download the Oxfam toolbar, which raises money for Oxfam every time you do a search. This costs you nothing to do a good deed!
